Thank for your interest in submitting to Travel Writers' Tales. We are not accepting submissions from new writers at this time, and these guidelines are posted solely for the benefit of our current bank of contributors.
We are looking for compelling travel features written from a personal perspective and which evoke a strong sense of place. They should be based on trips taken within the previous year.
If your article is accepted, it will be published on a CD and submitted to sponsoring newspapers. Payment is dependent on number of sales to publishing papers.
Please note that submissions will not be considered, unless they comply strictly with the following writers' guidelines
- Check the sidebar of www.travelwriterstales.com to determine what destinations are currently being accepted
- Submit completed articles only. No queries please. At this time, we are not providing any letters of assignment.
Original stories and articles that have been previously published are acceptable, provided they have not been printed in any of the sponsoring newspapers. See the current sponsors at: www.travelwriterstales.com
- When submitting, please ensure that the title of your article is in the subject line of your email.
- Articles must be between 700 - 750 words. Longer submissions will not be considered. An additional 100 words is acceptable for the sidebar.
- Excellence in writing, grammar, punctuation, structure and style is mandatory. We prefer gripping stories told in the first person, and are not interested in brochure-style articles, press releases or promotional pieces. Before submitting your work, we would recommend that you check out sample articles posted on www.travelwriterstales.com in order to get an idea of the type of material we prefer to publish
- Paste the text directly into the e-mail message and also attach your article as an "MS Word" document.
- Please use Times New Roman size 12 type and font throughout and single space the body of the article. No fancy fonts please, and no double spacing.
- Please format throughout as "left-justified," and without indenting paragraphs.
- Please do not skip two spaces at the end of a sentence. Just one!
- No headers, footers or numbered items please.
- Please do not send us photos embedded in your MS Word Document.
Photos: We require these as 'jpeg' attachments 200 dpi, maximum size: 8" x 6". Please do not send 'tiffs' or 'bmps'. Captions must accompany each image, together with the name of the photographer for accreditation purposes. We require your written undertaking that your photographs do not infringe copyright regulations. A numbered 'key' to the photos, with captions should be appended at the end of your article (after the sidebar text).
- We respond to all submissions within 4 weeks.
- A new CD is created every 6 months. Once your article is approved, it will be burned onto the next CD with the other accepted stories. The CD will then be submitted to sponsoring publications. The time frame between acceptance and publishing of your story may be as long as 1 year, but you will receive payment after remuneration has been received from each sponsoring publication.
- Although the payment is $5.00 per article, a single CD may be sold to numerous publications. In other words if your story goes to 20 newspapers (see our web-site for listings), this will result in a cheque for $100. The remuneration may seem minimal, but the publication credits will be a valuable addition to your professional portfolio.
- A copy of each tear sheet will be mailed out to you.
